Quantum of the Seas: 8 Must-Do Hacks (Including the $9 'Tourist' Drink!)

Sailing on a massive ship like Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas is an incredible experience, but it can also be overwhelming. Between the high-tech entertainment, dozens of dining options, and a deck plan that feels like a small city, it is easy to miss the best value spots or spend way more than you intended.

At ROCKIN' the BOAT, we are all about maximizing the fun while keeping your budget in check. Whether you are planning your first voyage or you are a seasoned cruiser looking for new tricks, these eight hacks will change how you navigate this ship. Melizzia and I have spent plenty of time testing these out, and they are total game-changers. If you would like to watch a video instead here is our video on the Top 8 Must Do's on Quantum Of The Seas:

(Article continues below video)

1. The Stairway to Vertigo (Deck 14)

Most cruisers walk right past one of the coolest: and most nerve-wracking: features on the ship. Located on Deck 14, near the entrance to the Solarium, you will find a small, unassuming glass platform that extends out over the side of the ship.

We call it the "Stairway to Vertigo." It is a clear glass floor that allows you to look straight down at the ocean hundreds of feet below. It is the perfect spot for a unique photo, but it is not for the faint of heart. If you want to test your nerves without paying for a specialized excursion, this is the place to do it.

2. Sequins and Feathers: Get to the 270 Lounge Early

The 270 Lounge is a masterpiece of maritime engineering. During the day, it is a massive living room with 270-degree floor-to-ceiling views of the wake. At night, it transforms into a high-tech theater with robotic screens and aerialists.

The problem? Everyone wants to see the shows here, and seating fills up fast. If you show up five minutes before showtime, you will likely be standing at the back. To truly appreciate the "Sequins and Feathers" and other headliner acts, you need to arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes early. Grab a drink, find a seat on the lower level for the best view of the stage and the Vistarama screens, and settle in. It is one of the most immersive entertainment experiences at sea, but only if you have a good vantage point.

3. The $9 'Tourist' Drink at the Bionic Bar

The Bionic Bar is usually a place where people pay $14 to $16 for a gimmick: watching two robotic arms mix a drink. However, there is a legendary "off-menu" hack known as the "Tourist."

At the Bionic Bar, you use a tablet to order. Instead of choosing a pre-set menu item, go to the "Create Your Own" section. To make the "Tourist," you want to mix:

  • Kahlúa

  • Johnny Walker Black

  • Sprite

  • Coke

It sounds like a strange combination, but it is surprisingly refreshing and, most importantly, it often rings up around the $9 mark depending on current promotions and drink package rules. It is a potent, budget-friendly way to enjoy the robotics without the premium price tag.

4. Harp & Horn Pub: The Hidden Food Value

Many cruisers think they have to choose between the Windjammer buffet or expensive specialty dining. They completely overlook the Harp & Horn Pub. While the drinks are the main draw, the food menu here is a hidden gem for cheap, high-quality eats.

Skip the standard buffet fare for a night and try the pulled pork nachos or the lobster mac and cheese wedges. These items are significantly better than the standard snack bar options and are perfect for a casual lunch or a late-night bite. It is a "pro" move for those who want a pub atmosphere with food that punches way above its weight class.

5. The Chops Grille Lunch Hack

Chops Grille is the gold standard for steak on Royal Caribbean, but a dinner reservation can run you upwards of $60 per person. Here is the secret: book Chops for lunch instead.

You can often get a full steak lunch for around $17.99 to $24.99. You get the same high-quality cuts of meat, the signature sides, and that upscale service for a fraction of the cost. It is the ultimate way to enjoy luxury dining without the luxury bill. We always recommend this to our community members who want to celebrate a special occasion without blowing the entire cruise budget.

6. Northstar Experience: Book the Free Version ASAP

The Northstar is the glass observation capsule that lifts you 300 feet above sea level. On some sailings, Royal Caribbean charges a premium for this experience while at sea. However, there is almost always a "complimentary" version offered while the ship is in port.

The catch? These slots vanish in minutes. As soon as you step on the ship and connect to the Wi-Fi, open the Royal Caribbean app and book your Northstar time immediately. Do not wait until day two, or you will be looking at a $20+ per person charge for something you could have done for free.

7. SeaPlex Fun: Seated Soccer and Free Hot Dogs

The SeaPlex is the largest indoor active space at sea, featuring bumper cars, roller skating, and basketball. One of the most underrated activities here is "seated soccer": it is exactly what it sounds like, and it is hilarious to play and watch.

While you are there, don't forget about the Dog House. It is a specialized hot dog stand located right inside the SeaPlex. It is completely free and offers a variety of gourmet sausages and toppings. It is a much faster (and often tastier) option than trekking all the way back to the Windjammer when the kids get hungry between games.

8. Room Service: The $7.95 Flat Fee Trick

Most people avoid room service because they think every item has a delivery charge. On Royal Caribbean, you pay a flat fee (usually around $7.95) per order, not per item. This means you can order the entire menu for one single delivery fee.

If you are having a movie night in the cabin with the family, order five pizzas, three salads, and four desserts. The price stays the same. Also, make sure to try the "Woo Burger." It is a fan-favorite onboard and is the perfect solution for those late-night cravings after a long day of exploring ports.

Penny’s Pro Picks: Essential Cruise Gear

To make these hacks even easier to pull off, you need the right gear. Here are my top recommendations for your Quantum of the Seas adventure:

  • Magnetic Hooks for Cabin Walls: Most cruise ship walls are metal. These hooks are essential for hanging up damp swimsuits, hats, and lanyards, keeping your small cabin organized. View on Amazon

  • Non-Surge Protected Power Strip: Outlets are scarce in older and even some newer cabins. This cruise-approved power strip ensures you can charge your phone, camera, and Kindle all at once. View on Amazon

  • Cruise Lanyards with ID Holder: You will use your SeaPass card for everything from the Bionic Bar to the Northstar. Keep it around your neck so you never lose it. View on Amazon

  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Perfect for the Stairway to Vertigo or when you’re heading out on a shore excursion. View on Amazon
