Amber Cove Uncovered: Your Ultimate Guide to Carnival’s Dominican Paradise

If you are sailing with Carnival, Princess, or Holland America in the Caribbean, there is a high probability that Amber Cove is on your itinerary. Located on the northern "Amber Coast" of the Dominican Republic, just outside of Puerto Plata, this 30-acre port is not just a place to dock; it is a full-blown destination.

When Melizzia and I first pulled into Amber Cove, the first thing we noticed was how massive the facility is. Unlike many ports where you have to take a bus or a tender boat to get to the action, Amber Cove features a long T-shaped pier that brings you right into the heart of the resort.

Whether you want to spend $0 or go all-out on a private overwater cabana, knowing the layout and the hidden gems can make or break your day. Here is everything you need to know to navigate Amber Cove like a pro.

The "Left or Right" Rule: Navigating the Port Layout

One of the most common stressors for cruisers is getting off the ship and feeling overwhelmed by the crowds. At Amber Cove, there is a simple rule of thumb to help you find your "vibe" immediately: Go Left for shopping and culture, Go Right for the pool and activities.

When you reach the end of the long pier (which also has a free bicycle taxi if you aren't up for the walk), you will enter the main plaza.

  • To the Left: You will find the retail heart of the port. This area is packed with duty-free shops, local artisan stalls, and the transportation hub where you can catch excursions or taxis to Puerto Plata.

  • To the Right: This is where the party is. You’ll head toward the massive resort-style pool, the zipline, the waterslides, and the famous Coco Caña bar.

The Best Freebies: Sun, Swims, and the Secret Garden

The greatest advantage of Amber Cove is that you do not need to book an excursion to have a fantastic day. Unlike some ports where the "free" area is just a concrete slab with some shops, Amber Cove offers a legitimate resort experience at no extra cost.

The Massive Resort Pool

The centerpiece of the port is the giant swimming pool. It is essentially a hybrid between a standard pool and a lazy river, featuring plenty of shallow areas for kids and a swim-up bar for the adults. There are hundreds of lounge chairs available for free, though they do fill up fast on days when two large ships are in port.

The Secret Garden

If the pool area feels a bit too high-energy for you, follow the signs toward the "Secret Garden." This is one of our favorite spots. It is a lush, quiet area tucked away from the main music and crowds. The best part? It is filled with free hammocks. It is the perfect place to grab a book, feel the ocean breeze, and relax while the rest of the ship is fighting over poolside loungers. Melizzia loves heading here for a quick afternoon nap before heading back to the ship.

Food and Drink: A Taste of the DR

You could go back to the ship for a free lunch, but you would be missing out on some of the best flavors in the Caribbean. Dominican cuisine is flavorful, hearty, and surprisingly affordable.

Must-Try Snacks

When you get hungry, head to the food stalls near the market area. You absolutely have to try:

  • Chicken Empanadas: These are crispy, golden-brown pockets of joy. They are the perfect handheld snack while you explore.

  • Cheese-Filled Yuka Balls: If you like mozzarella sticks, these are their superior tropical cousins. Made from cassava (Yuka), they are starchy, savory, and incredibly satisfying.

Local Brews

To wash it all down, ask for a Presidente. It is the pride of the Dominican Republic. You can usually find the "Lager" or the "Light" version. Drinking a cold Presidente while overlooking the bay is an essential Amber Cove experience.

Shopping with a Purpose

If you want to bring something home that isn’t a plastic magnet made in a factory, Amber Cove has some fantastic options that support the local community.

The Mar

This is a dedicated space for local crafts. You will find hand-carved wood, beautiful Larimar jewelry (a blue stone found only in the Dominican Republic), and vibrant local art. It is a step above your standard tourist kitsch.

Shaka Chocolate

This is a "must-visit" for any chocolate lover. Shaka is a chocolate store that is more than just a retail shop; it is a social enterprise that supports local Dominican women. You can see how the chocolate is made, sample different percentages of cacao, and buy bars that directly benefit the families in the surrounding hills. It is delicious, and it feels good to support a local cause.

Instagrammable Moments: Where to Snap the Best Shots

If you didn’t take a photo, did the cruise even happen? Amber Cove was designed with social media in mind.

  1. The Amber Cove Sign: Located at the far left end of the port, this colorful sign offers the perfect backdrop with your cruise ship towering in the background.

  2. The Giant Chair: Near the hammock area and the Secret Garden, you will find a massive oversized chair. It is a fun photo op for groups or kids: just be prepared to wait in a short line during peak hours.

Paid Perks and Activities

For those looking for a bit more adrenaline or pampering, there are several "pay-per-use" activities that are worth the investment.

  • Ziplining: You can soar across the pool area for a bird's-eye view of the port. It is a relatively short run but high on thrills.

  • Equipment Rentals: If you want to get out on the water, you can rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards right at the port's edge.

  • The Fish Pedicure: This is one of the more unique offerings. For about $16.50, you can sit for 10 minutes while tiny Garra rufa fish exfoliate your feet. It tickles like crazy, but your feet will feel incredibly smooth afterward.

Essential Practical Info

To ensure your day goes smoothly, keep these logistics in mind:

  • Wi-Fi: The ship's internet usually cuts out once you are deep into the port. You can purchase a day pass for the port Wi-Fi for about $8.

  • Lockers: If you are traveling solo or want to keep your valuables safe while you hit the slides, lockers are available for $6 per day.

  • Safety Note: Amber Cove is a very safe, contained environment. However, like any crowded resort, it is vital to keep a close eye on your little ones. There was a story recently of a child who went missing in the port; thankfully, the staff was incredible and she was found quickly and safely. Just remember to designate a meeting spot if your group gets separated!

Beyond the Port: Shore Excursions

While the port is amazing, the Dominican Republic has so much more to offer. If you want to see the "real" DR, we highly recommend booking a tour. From the historic Fortaleza San Felipe to the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua, there is plenty of adventure just 20-30 minutes away.

Our Pro Picks

To make the most of your day at Amber Cove, I recommend packing these essentials:

  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Perfect for the pool and the fish pedicure! Buy it on Amazon

  • Mineral Sunscreen: The Caribbean sun is no joke, and the DR is working hard to protect its reefs. Buy it on Amazon

  • Microfiber Travel Towel: While the ship provides towels, these dry faster and are much easier to carry if you head out on an excursion. Buy it on Amazon

Amber Cove is truly one of the most convenient and enjoyable ports in the Carnival lineup. Whether you are there for the cheese-filled Yuka balls or a nap in a hammock, you are going to have an incredible time.

Keep Rockin' The Boat! 🤘🚢
